"Each of the selves (higher and lower) has a three-fold nature. In the lower self or everyday personality, there are the mental, emotional, and physical levels. These are matched in The Higher Self by 3 facets which will be called herein The Atmic, The Buddhic, and The Brahmic."
"The lower self has 3 bodies or 'sheaths' corresponding to the 3 facets. The Aetheric Body responds to the mental vibrations. The Astral Body responds to emotional states. And the physical body is the seat of all earth-related sensation and carnality. In The Higher Self, the 3 facets named Atmic, Buddhic, and Brahmic can be thought of as bodies or sheaths that correspond to the mental, emotional, and physical respectively."
"There is a beautiful symbolic diagram which shows all 3 bodies for both selves and which is more ancient than any other of man's symbols. Begin by drawing a triangle of equal sides with the peak pointing up. This represents The Higher Self with its 3 facets. The upward pointing apex signifies that The Higher Self's attention is constantly on the spiritual light from above. Now draw another triangle below the first, also an equal-sided figure but with the point downwardly. This bottom triangle represents the lower self with its 3-faceted make-up, and the downward pointing apex signifies that the attention of the lower self or personality is downwardly toward things of The Earth, practical considerations, etc."
"These 2 triangles, representing The Higher Self and the lower self, may be thought of as joined by a multiplicity of energy paths connected between various parts of the 2 triangles like electric wires. Along these paths, wisdom and energy from The Higher Self flow to the lower, and experience and knowledge from the lower flow up to The Higher. It should be pointed out that the energy from The Higher Self which feeds into the lower self is not sufficient to 'run the engine' of the personality and must be supplemented by pranic force. However, when the energy and contact from The Higher Self is reduced or limited, the ability of the lower sheaths to extract energy from the aetheric prana is also curtailed, and weakness or illness can result. This is due to the fact that the soul-energies from The Higher Self are like master-circuits that control all others."
"The aim of the seeker after soul-advancement is to try to link The Higher and lower selves together by the strongest possible energy paths, so that, in effect, the attitudes and wisdom of The Higher Self become available to the conscious personality. Through perseverence and self-control this state of one-ness can be attained, and it is represented symbolically by drawing the 2 triangles, one on top of the other. The result is, of course, the ancient symbol which has been utilized by the Jewish Religion as The Star of David."
"Moreover, the true significance of this beautiful geometric figure will explain the symbolic purpose served by water when it crystalizes as snow. Men have wondered for eons why the snowflakes are 6-pointed. Few have guessed that the phenomenon was meant to remind them ceaselessly of the goal of earth incarnation in terms of bringing The Higher Self and the lower self into one-ness with each other."
